Non-Immigrant Visa General Information (does not apply to A, G, and C3 Visas)
We are committed to making the visa application process as clear and open as possible. Please read more in our Customer Service Statement to Visa Applicants (Información del Servicio al Cliente para los solicitantes de visas).
Today, as in the past, many travelers to the U.S. must obtain a visa. The process includes the need to complete application forms and interviews with a consular officer as well as the collection and cross-checking of names in a highly sophisticated U.S. Government database. As a visa applicant today, it is important that you recognize that these name-checking and registration processes are necessary and crucial elements helping to protect our citizens and our visitors. Because of this process, some visas take several weeks to process. Therefore, please allow sufficient time to apply for and receive your visa.
NOTE: APPLICATION PROCEDURES HAVE CHANGED, SEE BELOW. THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO A, G, AND C3 VISAS, AND APPLICANTS SEEKING EMERGENCY APPOINTMENTS.
To start your application process, you must first schedule an appointment by telephone or Internet. FOR MORE INFORMATION ON HOW TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT, CLICK HERE.

RECENTLY CHANGED APPLICATION PROCESSING PROCEDURES:
* After making their visa interview appointment, applicants will be prompted to schedule an appointment for data collection, which will be one to seven days before the visa interview. Data collection will take place by appointment only at the new Applicant Service Center (ASC). Customer service representatives at the ASC will enroll visa applicants and capture biometrics (photographs and fingerprints) prior to the visa interview at the Consulate.
* Visa applications are now to be completed online at https://ceac.state.gov/genniv/ . BE SURE TO PRINT OUT THE VISA APPLICATION CONFIRMATION PAGE. You only need to print out the confirmation page, nothing else.
* The following procedures apply to all visa classifications, with the exception of A and H2 visas and emergency appointment applicants. Visa applicants must now submit their fingerprints and be photographed at the ASC by appointment only, located at Calle Peru 4210, Colonia San Rafael, Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, C.P. 88200.
* The ASC is open Monday through Friday, 10am-8pm and Saturday 12pm-5pm.
*If a child of 6 or younger is applying, the child is not required to attend, but is allowed to enter the ASC. A photo must be provided if the child does not attend. At least one parent must attend the interview on behalf of the child. Both parents can attend if they so choose. Note: if both parents are also applying and have appointments they must both be present.
If you have a valid US visa, you can take a cab from either the US or Mexican side to your first appointment which is your ASC appointment. This process usually only takes about 30 minutes. Once you finish with this, you can take a cab back to the hotel in the US side (if staying there) and wait until your interview.
Interview Date:
On the day of your interview, you can park your car along the border, walk across, and then take a cab on the Mexcian side to the US consulate. There are parking lots all along the border. It is best to go through Bridge 1. The cost for this is about $6.00 to $10.00. You can also have the hotel front desk arrange for the taxi to meet you in the morning on the day of your appointment. Remember that if you take a cab on the US side to cross you into Mexico, it will cost you more than taking one on the Mexican side. You decide how you want to go about it. I suggest that you leave at least 1 hour prior to your appointment so you can get there with plenty of time. As soon as you arrive, you need to get with the security guards and show them your appointment confirmation. They will then assist you in getting in the proper line.
If you don't have a valid US visa, you will need to stay in Nuevo Laredo after your ASC appointment. You can also take a cab straight from the airport in Laredo, Tx. to the Crowne Plaza hotel which is 3 blocks away from the US consulate in Nuevo Laredo.
You must have the following documents ready when entering the US consulate:
DS Application Forms. These forms must be filled out correctly and both bar codes must be printed correctly.
Approval Notice/ I 20
Appointment Confirmation
US Visa Application Fee receipt. a.k.a. DD, Banamex payment
You must also not carry with you the following items:
Cell phones, cameras, USB drives, cd's, floppy disks, anything electronic or with a digital screen, cigarettes, lighters, matches, pocket knives, nail clippers, make-up for the ladies, gum, candy, mints, water, food, etc.
You must also have your belts in hand when going throught the security metal detectors. Just think of it as airport security when going in.
Your interview will probably last anywhere from 5 - 20 minutes depending on what you do, who you work for etc. It is important to have all your supporting documents and be prepared to explain your job title, type of work that you do, employer/ client information, etc.
You may be asked to return after lunch to pick up the visa. You can use this time to go for lunch or take a tour depending on what time they ask you to return.
As soon as you get your US visa check it to make sure everything is correct. The sooner you catch your mistake if any, the greater your chances are of getting it back again before they close. Otherwise they may ask you to return the following day. Once you determine that everything is correct, take a cab back to the border and walk across straight into the US Immigration office. You will then show your new US Visa and pay $6.00 for your new I 94 card.
As soon as you finish there you are free to go home.
